Society overall especially politicians and law makers are not working hard enough to end inequalities in the criminal justice system. The rate of incarceration is historically high; perhaps the most important social fact is the inequality in criminal justice system. This inequality produces extraordinary rates of incarceration among young African American men with no more than a high school education. For these young men, serving time in prison has become a normal life event.
The source of the problem is racism and discrimination. We cannot run society for the privileged and allow a significant proportion of the population to be marginalized. It impacts the quality of life for all of us if we have to throw away people. A justice system which tolerates injustice is doomed to collapse.
Structural changes must be done in criminal justice system, accompanied by changes at the cultural and personal levels as well. New laws can help steer societal forces in the right direction, challenging individuals, law enforcement agencies, and other institutions to evaluate their own internal biases.
For my semester project I decided to create posters which highlight the inequalities of the criminal justice system. Learning about the Guerrilla Girls and Gran Fury inspired me.Using their tactics I added facts, statistic and images that will get peoples attention and realize that the system is broken. These facts are worth paying attention as they normally go unnoticed. People need to wake up and get involved so we can have a better chance to fight for a change where everyone is treated equal.
