The Disney Empire

For my semester project I will be talking and presenting how Disney has become an unstoppable media conglomerate. I will be raising awareness to how Disney has basically become an empire of companies, and how they are controlling what we watch and what type of information we can consume. In my presentation I will be showing a powerpoint with charts that study the growing Disney empire. I will also be creating posters that show the companies that Disney owns and I will post them around the school.
For this project I have researched and found websites such as: Freepress.net, Storify.com, and Visually.com which show data and statistics on the Walt Disney Company's media market and how it is expanding. One of the artists that inspired my  project is Tana Hargest because her project New Negrotopia is using propaganda to advertise her fictitious theme park using familiar Disney park layouts and font. I was also inspired by the old Russian propaganda posters during the industrial revolution and the Hitler promotion posters before WWII. I was also inspired by Disney itself with the Star Wars posters to join the empire or the rebel alliance, which are most likely inspired by WWI and WWII army posters.

I am making this project because everybody watches TV and are on media 24/7, so they should be aware of who is controlling the content that they watch. Because 3 companies own 90% of the media industry the information that is shown to us becomes more biased and one-sided, so it should be a concern to everybody who watches TV and those who are on media.

  1. It's an interesting topic. I am personally a Disney fan, I know Disney has expanded though - yes they have Disney Channel, but did you know they own ABC Family, Marvel and part of Univsion Spanish soap operas and series? How is this going to be presented outside of class to spread the word? What would this be considered? Is is bad or good.

  2. Hi Bridget, I find Disney entertaining and intriguing also. I am looking forward to your project, indeed most of the movies we watch are owned by Disney and all the big corporations that show only what high executives choose to transmit. For what reason I feel they choose low cost television. Most of these big corporation are favoring reality TV ?.. what do you think about that?.. is it because is cheap to produce?
